Cranial Adjusting – Beyond the Spine
When most people think of chiropractic care, they think of spines, backs, and necks. While the spine is central to what we do, chiropractic care can also extend beyond the spine – including something called cranial adjusting.
What is Cranial Adjusting?
Cranial adjusting involves very gentle techniques applied to the bones of the skull (the cranium). These areas are important because they help regulate the movement of cerebrospinal fluid – the fluid that cushions and nourishes your brain and spinal cord.
Unlike the “clicks” or “pops” you may associate with spinal adjustments, cranial adjustments are extremely subtle. Often, they feel like light pressure or gentle holds. Despite being so gentle, they can have a profound influence on how the nervous system functions.
Why Does the Skull Need Adjusting?
Although the bones of the skull are joined, they are not completely fused. They have small but important natural movements that play a role in the body’s overall balance and rhythm. Injuries, tension, birth stresses, or even day-to-day strain can affect this movement.
When these subtle movements are restricted, it may place stress on the nervous system and affect the way your body regulates itself. Cranial adjusting aims to restore balance and improve the flow of cerebrospinal fluid.
Benefits of Cranial Adjusting
Because it directly influences the nervous system, cranial adjusting can support:
- Relaxation and stress relief
- Clearer breathing patterns
- Balanced posture
- Improved function in the head, jaw, and neck areas
For some people, this may feel like “taking the pressure off” their system.
